Tanner Sorenson knew for a while that he was going to be a Michigan State Spartan.

Now it’s official.

On Friday, the Shattuck-St. Mary’s senior forward signed a National Letter of Intent to play hockey at Michigan State next year.

“It’s kind of relieving,” Sorenson said. “It’s nice knowing everything’s set in stone now.”

“It makes it official from everybody’s perspective,” SSM coach Tom Ward said. “The next thing is they have to show up and earn their deal on campus. There’s no more formality of, ‘Where am I going?’ They’re officially locked in.”

Sorenson, originally from Anchorage, Alaska, said he had interest from east coast schools as well as interest from his hometown school, the University of Alaska-Anchorage. But after visiting the MSU campus several years back, he was hooked.

“It was easy for me to commit there because it was always a dream of mine,” he said.

“I think the college life’s going to be a lot of fun. They’ve got good basketball and good football. … It’ll be fun going to all those events.”

Ward expects Sorenson — who is currently third on the Sabres prep team with 26 points — to fill in perfectly at the skill position for the Spartans.

“Michigan State needs players like him,” Ward said. “They’re out searching for some skill for their team. He will be a guy that’ll be a puck mover, a puck distributor.”

As a junior on the SSM prep team last year, Sorenson tallied 29 goals and 29 assists, good for third on the team in scoring. With over a dozen games played so far, Ward has seen Sorenson’s game improve even more.

“He’s a well-rounded player,” Ward said. “He plays fast and can really skate. He handles the puck. He’s turning into a real leader here.”
